英語のイデオム

英語のイデオムは、英語学習上の厄介な問題です。
個々の単語の意味は分かっても、それらの組合せである idiom は、まるで似ても似つかない意味に
なっている場合が多いです。ここでは、本、英英辞書、AFN, Web site などで拾った idiom を掲載します。

使っている英英辞書は、Dictionary of American English (RANDOM HOUSE 以下、DAE と略記)、
Advanced American Dictionary(LONGMAN 以下、AADと略す)　の２冊です。

英語のidioms　を総て暗記しよう、などという決心は絶対にしないことをお勧めします。
或る、Native Speaker に、idioms の習得が難しいので、どうやたら習得できるだろうか、
と問いかけたら、答えは、「自分に必要なものを、習得し、使うこと」、ということでした。
Native Speaker も総てのidioms を知っているわけではない、とのことでした。

同じことが、日本語にもあてはまりますね。「広辞苑」にのっている日本語を私達は、必ずしも、
総てを知らなくても、日常のコミュニケーションには、何も問題ない、のと同じです。

多分、自分に必要とする、Occasion なり Situation を想定して、その世界に関係するidioms を
拾い集め、自分の物とするとよいのでしょう。間違っても、辞書に掲載されているidiom を片っ端から
暗記しよう、などと思わないことです。


Idiom の定義です。

　　　 DAEでは次のように定義しています：　
            An expression or phrases that does not follow regular rules of grammar, or one whose 
            meaning cannot be predicted from the meaning of its individual parts.

以下、折にふれて拾ったイデオムです。

skelton in the closet = 誰もが持っている（人に知られたくない）個人的な秘密。

would rather = to prefer that or to
            I would rather be fishing.

take down = to write down 　書き留める。
            to take down a speeech.

come along = to proceed or advance
            How is that coming along ?  (この場合の that は話の両者の共通話題。)
            The project is coming along on schedule.
　　　　　　How is the project going ?
            「うまく行ってるかい？」と様子を聞くときに使う。

throw in = to add something extra as a bonus
            Can you throw in the delivery for free ?
            They throw meals in for the cost of the hotel room.

take part in = to participate, share or partake
            He refused to take part in the festivities.

take someone for a ride = to deceive, trick
            Those swindlers took us for a ride.

take someone's part = to support or defend someone
            I'll take your part when times get rough.
